Our story.
Founded by Jonathan Bird, Sark Sea Salt was born through an emotive connection to the sea, a passion for cooking and a love of the rugged Sark landscape he was brought up on. A childhood spent sailing, fishing and swimming in the island’s crystal-clear waters, has ensured Sark remains a special place for him all these years later.
Maintaining that salt is one of the most important ingredients around the world, Jonathan believes that salt is something that connects every person. Every dish, in every kitchen, in every culture has and will continue to use salt to unlock, enhance and preserve flavours. Therefore, using and manufacturing quality salt matters.
This thought combined with an ever-increasing demand for locally sourced and organic produce, led Jonathan to seize the opportunity of bringing the taste of Sark to tables nationwide. With its unique geographical positioning, combining cold Atlantic water with the pristine water of the Channel, he knew Sark seawater was unique and would yield a remarkable tasting salt.
As the first salt produced on the island, and with a great deal of passion and support from family and friends, Sark Sea Salt was formed. Working hard to preserve traditional methods and time-honoured techniques, every batch of hand-harvested salt pioneers locality and craftsmanship.
